Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Calgary specialize in the surgical and medical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our doctors devote an average of 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergrad studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to typical medical school and in point of fact various podiatry programs are located within these schools. Upon receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
At the finalization of the internship or residency, our Doctors have received wide-ranging medical training with a main focus on conditions pertaining to the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are trained to manage problems ranging from standard conditions for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more complicated for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have comprehensive surgical training which give them the skill required to execute surgery on those complications that are ideally managed through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have an extensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs endure as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it possible for a Podiatric doctor to design footwear and orthotics which can provide pain relief and prevent many problems which the feet routinely experience.
