Physicians here at The Foot Institute – Edmonton focus on the medical and surgical therapy of the foot and ankle. They spend approximately a decade in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and as a matter of fact various podiatry programs are located within these schools. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 to 3 years.
At the fulfillment of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric doctors have acquired considerable medical training with an importance on issues involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are trained to manage concerns ranging from regular disorders such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are even more complicated like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have extensive surgical instruction which provide them the practical experience crucial to execute surgery on those concerns that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet withstand as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait peculiarities permits a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and protect against a large number of issues which the feet routinely encounter.
