Health professionals here at The Foot Institute – Edmonton focus on the medical and surgical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists devote an average of ten years in learning, the first four years in undergrad studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and in fact various podiatry programs are contained within these institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 - 3 years.
Upon the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have acquired encompassing health care education with a focus on problems concerning the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are trained to treat issues ranging from standard disorders for instance fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are far more obscure for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have significant surgical instruction which furnish them the experience crucial to carry out surgical treatment on those issues that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors likewise have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait problems permits a Podiatric physician to develop footwear and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and protect against a large number of problems which the feet routinely experience.
