Physicians at The Foot Institute – Edmonton focus on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists spend an average of 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergrad studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to usual medical school and in reality a number of podiatry training programs are located within these academic institutions. After receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
At the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have obtained comprehensive health care training with a focus on concerns pertaining to the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are trained to manage difficulties ranging from general disorders for example, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more perplexing such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have comprehensive surgical training which provide them the prior experience vital to perform surgery on those complications that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute additionally have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it easy for a Podiatrist to design footwear and orthotics which can provide pain relief and avoid countless problems which the feet regularly encounter.
