Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Calgary Sunpark specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They spend an average of 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to typical medical school and in reality a number of podiatry programs lie within these academic institutions. After acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the finalization of the internship or post degree residency, our Doctors have received extensive healthcare education with a concentration on difficulties regarding the ankles and feet. They are taught to treat complications stretching from general ailments such as ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are more obscure like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have considerable surgical instruction which give them the practical experience needed to perform surgical treatment on those troubles that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait deviations permits a Foot doctor to design shoes and orthotics that can provide pain relief and protect against many troubles which the feet normally encounter.
