Doctors at The Foot Institute – Calgary Sunpark specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Foot Institute Doctors devote about ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and actually a number of podiatry training programs are contained within these academic institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
At the finalization of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have received significant medical instruction with a focus on issues involving the ankles and feet. They are studied to handle problems extending from typical disorders for instance, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more intricate such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have substantial surgical instruction which provide them the experience needed to execute surgery on those problems that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait deviations makes it possible for a Foot doctor to develop shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and prevent numerous complications which the feet generally encounter.
