Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Calgary Sunpark specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Foot Institute Podiatrists devote around ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to standard medical school and actually quite a number podiatry training programs are contained inside these institutions. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 - 3 years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have acquired substantial health care training with an emphasis on conditions pertaining to the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are educated to care for concerns varying from simple afflictions such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are even more obscure for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical training which provide them the prior experience necessary to perform surgery on those concerns that are ideally remedied through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait irregularities allows a Podiatric doctor to design footwear and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and reduce the chances of many conditions which the feet routinely encounter.
