Specialists at The Foot Institute – Calgary Sunpark specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists invest approximately 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and actually several podiatry programmes are located within these schools. Upon attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
Upon the fulfillment of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have received comprehensive health care instruction with a stress on issues involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are educated to treat conditions stretching from standard ailments like ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more complex for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have comprehensive surgical instruction which furnish them the practical experience necessary to perform surgery on those concerns that are ideally remedied through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs endure as we walk, run or perform other activities. Comprehending biomechanics and gait problems facilitates a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and avoid many troubles which the feet commonly experience.
