Physicians at The Foot Institute – Calgary concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists spend approximately 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in fact a number of podiatry training programs are located within these academic institutions. After procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the fulfillment of the internship or post degree residency, our Doctors have received comprehensive healthcare training with an attention to on complications involving the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are instructed to address complications stretching from simple afflictions for instance ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more complicated such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical instruction which furnish them the prior experience necessary to execute surgery on those troubles that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs go through as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait irregularities allows a Foot doctor to create footwear and orthotics which can provide pain relief and avoid numerous conditions which the feet normally experience.
