Doctors at The Foot Institute – Calgary focus on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Foot Institute Doctors spend about ten years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and actually several podiatry programmes are located within these academic institutions. Upon procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
Upon the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have acquired extensive health care training with a concentration on issues involving the feet and ankles. They are taught to treat complications varying from standard afflictions for example, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are more intricate for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical training which provide them the experience vital to execute surgical treatment on those conditions that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait problems allows a Podiatric physician to develop footwear and orthotics that can deliver pain relief and help prevent numerous issues which the feet commonly experience.
