Specialists at The Foot Institute – Calgary North focus on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Foot Institute Podiatrists devote about ten years in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to usual medical school and in reality a number of podiatry training programs are located inside these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
At the fulfillment of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have received thorough medical training with a concentration on problems concerning the feet and ankles. They are trained to handle complications ranging from normal afflictions such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are more challenging including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have comprehensive surgical training which furnish them the practical experience necessary to execute surgery on those conditions that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait peculiarities facilitates a Podiatric doctor to design footwear and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and minimize the risk of many complications which the feet usually encounter.
