Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Fort McMurray - Thickwood Heights focus on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Foot Institute Podiatrists invest about 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to usual medical school and in reality many podiatry training programs lie inside these academic institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional 1 - 3 years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have received extensive healthcare training with an emphasis on problems pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are educated to handle difficulties varying from conventional problems for example, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are much more complicated such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have significant surgical training which furnish them the experience essential to perform surgery on those conditions that are ideally remedied through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet experience as we walk, run or perform other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait peculiarities permits a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics that can provide pain relief and prevent countless conditions which the feet frequently experience.
