Medical professionals here at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie focus on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists spend approximately 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and in fact quite a number podiatry training programs are contained within these institutions. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric doctors have received substantial healthcare instruction with an attention to on complications concerning the ankles and feet. They are studied to manage problems ranging from common problems like fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are far more complicated like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have comprehensive surgical training which furnish them the expertise needed to perform surgical treatment on those complications that are ideally managed through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have an extensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Recognizing biomechanics and gait problems permits a Podiatrist to develop shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and reduce the chances of many complications which the feet commonly encounter.
