SWIFT Microwave Therapy

SWIFT Microwave Therapy calgary, Alberta

The SWIFT Microwave Therapy is an FDA approved and relatively innovative technology that is used to treat both common and plantar warts (verrucae).

The SWIFT Microwave Wart Therapy is a hand-held device that emits microwave energy through a small probe. The probe is applied to the surface of the wart and delivers a series of low-energy microwave pulses that heat the tissue beneath the wart causing the cells to break down and the wart to eventually disappear. This typically takes anywhere from one to twelve weeks, with treatments being approximately one month apart. The SWIFT operate at 8 GHz in the electromagnetic spectrum and form a non-iodizing radiation, which means it cannot cause damage to the DNA of living things.

The treatment is relatively painless and only takes a few minutes to complete.

One of the major advantages of this innovative technology is that it is highly effective at treating warts as opposed to traditional treatments. As demonstrated in recent clinical studies, the device has a success rate of up to 85% which is significantly higher than other traditional medical treatments such as cryotherapy (freezing) pharmaceuticals or topical medications.

Another advantage of the SWIFT is that it is very safe. Because it uses low-energy microwaves, there is only a very minor risk of permanent skin damage and scarring as opposed to traditional medical treatments which often leave scaring. If you are concerned about potential scaring, please consult with your Podiatric Physician. The same technology that powers Swift is also being used in the treatment of lung, liver, kidney, and breast cancer in different countries around the world. Additionally, the treatment is non-invasive and often does not require any anesthesia or numbing agents - however your Podiatric Physician may suggest anesthesia in some cases.

Questions You May Have:

  1. What is/are Plantar Warts (verrucae)?

    A) Plantar Warts are a very contagious and painful wart. They are small, hard, and often located on the sole or bottom of the foot. It is not uncommon to find them clustered together. They are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

  2. How long does the SWIFT procedure take?

    A) A typical Swift session runs for 15 minutes. However difficult cases may take longer.

  3. How many treatments will I require?

    A) Typically, a minimum of 1-3 treatments. For more sever cases or stubborn mosaic warts, 4-5 treatments may be required.

  4. Are there any side effects to the SWIFT treatment?

    A) No significant side effects have ever been reported although some minor scaring may occur depending on the severity of your condition. If you have any concerns, please consult with your Podiatric Physician prior to your treatment.

  5. How much does each treatment cost?

    A) $189.00 per session.

  6. It is safe for people of all ages.

    A) Absolutely!

  7. Who may not be a suitable candidate for the SWIFT Microwave Therapy?

    A) Anyone who is immune compromised (e.g., heavy drinkers or smokers, women who are pregnant, diabetics, autoimmune disorders, etc.). Such individuals are less likely to have a successful treatment and may take more sessions to complete treatment. The SWIFT is also not recommended for people with pacemakers, or metal implants. Individuals should not wear clothing nearby the treatment area with buttons, zippers, or jewellery. The Swift probe cannot be applied directly to a tattooed area of the foot.

  8. Is the SWIFT Therapy covered by insurance?

    A) Typically, Podiatric services are covered by private insurance, but we suggest you call your insurance company prior to your treatment if you have any concerns.

SWIFT® MICROWAVE APPLICATOR

In order to ensure there is no risk of cross contamination the generator has an inbuilt sensor which will only allow operation when a new, unused tip is attached to the applicator.

How Microwave Therapy Works

Wart Treament Applicator calgary, Alberta

1) Infected tissue can exist several millimetres below the surface and can often be diffcult to treat using traditional methods, resulting in either untreated tissue or significant damage.

2) Swift delivers a precise, highly controlled energy dose. As microwaves travel into the tissue, water molecules begin colliding and creating localised heat energy.

3) In just seconds the treatment is complete and the healing cascade begins immediately. Treated tissue is quickly replaced, repaired and regenerated.

Surgical Accreditation

To provide patients with the ease and flexibility of booking surgeries around their busy schedules, the Foot Institute maintains two fully accredited surgical facilities; one in Calgary and one in Edmonton. There are only a few similarly accredited facilities in Alberta.
