Physicians at The Foot Institute – Calgary Sunpark specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists put in about ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to usual medical school and in fact numerous podiatry programmes are contained inside these academic institutions. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Foot doctors have received thorough medical education with an emphasis on conditions regarding the feet and ankles. They are qualified to address concerns extending from common ailments such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are far more perplexing for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have thorough surgical training which give them the skill essential to perform surgery on those troubles that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait abnormalities permits a Podiatric physician to develop shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and defend against a large number of issues which the feet routinely experience.
