Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Red Deer focus on the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our doctors devote approximately 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergrad studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to general medical school and in reality a number of podiatry programs are contained within these schools. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
Upon the conclusion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have received extensive medical training with a concentration on concerns regarding the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are skilled to deal with issues ranging from conventional ailments like ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are more obscure including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have extensive surgical education which provide them the prior experience necessary to conduct surgical treatment on those troubles that are best treated through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs go through as we walk, run or perform other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait peculiarities enables a Foot doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and defend against many conditions which the feet normally encounter.
