Corns and Calluses Treatment Alberta

Corns and calluses are protective layers of compacted, dead skin cells. They are caused by repeated friction from skin rubbing against bony areas or against an irregularity in a shoe. Corns ordinarily form on the toes and calluses on the soles of the feet. The friction and pressure can burn or otherwise be painful and may be relieved by moleskin or padding on the affected areas. Corns and calluses can also occur when there is a bio-mechanical problem with the foot.

Never cut corns or calluses with any instrument and never apply home remedies except under a Podiatrist's instructions.

Causes of corns and calluses

  • Heredity
  • Ill-fitting shoes
  • Muscle or bio-mechanical imbalance
  • Bone spur or bony prominence

What can you do?

  • Wear a supportive shoe with no seams in the area of the corn or callus
  • Apply cold compresses to relieve pain
  • Soak the foot in luke-warm water to relieve pain
  • Apply lotion frequently to keep them soft
