Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists spend approximately 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in fact many podiatry programmes are located inside these academic institutions. After getting a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received encompassing health care education with a main focus on complications pertaining to the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are trained to deal with concerns ranging from conventional problems for instance, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more complicated such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical education which supply them the prior experience crucial to perform surgery on those issues that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait problems makes it easy for a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and reduce the chances of countless problems which the feet frequently encounter.
