Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. They devote approximately a decade in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and in fact many podiatry programs are located within these institutions. Upon achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional 1 - 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Foot doctors have obtained thorough healthcare training with a main focus on concerns concerning the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are taught to address issues stretching from standard conditions for instance, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more challenging for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have substantial surgical instruction which furnish them the practical experience required to conduct surgery on those concerns that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Recognizing biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it possible for a Podiatric physician to design footwear and orthotics which can give pain relief and help prevent many complications which the feet typically encounter.
