Doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer focus on the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our doctors invest approximately 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and as a matter of fact several podiatry training programs are located within these schools. Upon getting a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric doctors have gained thorough health care instruction with an emphasis on complications pertaining to the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are instructed to manage problems ranging from basic ailments like fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are more sophisticated for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have comprehensive surgical education which furnish them the practical experience necessary to carry out surgical treatment on those problems that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait abnormalities permits a Podiatrist to develop shoes and orthotics that can offer pain relief and minimize the risk of many troubles which the feet typically encounter.
