Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialise in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They spend approximately 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and several podiatry programs lie inside these schools. After procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.

At the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have received extensive healthcare training with a main focus on problems involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are taught to treat problems stretching from familiar afflictions such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are more obscure such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have substantial surgical education which supply them the expertise crucial to carry out surgery on those issues that are best treated through surgical intervention.

Foot Institute Doctors also have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait problems permits a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and prevent numerous issues which the feet usually encounter.
