Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialise in the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Foot Institute Podiatrists spend approximately 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs are located inside these schools. After receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional 1 to 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received substantial health care instruction with a focus on conditions regarding the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are instructed to care for conditions ranging from commonplace conditions for instance ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are even more intricate for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have substantial surgical education which provide them the expertise needed to perform surgical treatment on those troubles that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Learning about biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it easy for a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and help prevent a large number of conditions which the feet generally encounter.
