Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer provide services for the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They put in approximately 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and actually many podiatry training programs are located within these schools. Upon acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have gained extensive medical education with a main focus on problems concerning the ankles and feet. They are trained to treat complications varying from common ailments such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more complicated for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have considerable surgical education which give them the skill required to conduct surgical treatment on those conditions that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Realizing biomechanics and gait irregularities permits a Podiatrist to design footwear and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and protect against many complications which the feet routinely encounter.
