Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists devote an average of a decade in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and in fact several podiatry programs lie inside these institutions. Upon receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have obtained thorough medical training with a focus on complications involving the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are taught to treat problems ranging from familiar ailments such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more sophisticated for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have thorough surgical training which give them the expertise necessary to perform surgery on those conditions that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or perform other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait irregularities empowers a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and avoid many complications which the feet generally encounter.
