Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They invest around 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergrad studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to standard medical school and as a matter of fact quite a number podiatry programmes are contained within these institutions. After procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have received extensive health care training with a focus on complications involving the ankles and feet. They are trained to treat issues ranging from commonplace ailments for example, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are far more challenging for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have thorough surgical education which give them the prior experience necessary to conduct surgery on those issues that are ideally remedied through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet endure as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait abnormalities enables a Podiatric doctor to develop shoes and orthotics that can offer pain relief and protect against many complications which the feet normally experience.
