Physicians here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Foot Institute Podiatrists spend approximately 10 years in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to standard medical school and as a matter of fact quite a number podiatry programmes are contained within these institutions. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 - 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have obtained thorough health care training with a stress on complications pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are trained to treat problems ranging from familiar problems for instance, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are far more intricate for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical training which provide them the skill required to perform surgery on those problems that are best managed through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs withstand as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait irregularities permits a Podiatric physician to develop shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and reduce the chances of a large number of complications which the feet normally encounter.
