Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists put in an average of ten years in education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and many podiatry programmes lie inside these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional 1 to 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have gained comprehensive medical training with an emphasis on problems concerning the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are qualified to handle problems ranging from simple disorders for example, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are more sophisticated for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have substantial surgical education which give them the expertise necessary to execute surgical treatment on those concerns that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait problems makes it possible for a Foot doctor to create shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and protect against countless issues which the feet commonly encounter.
