Physicians at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our doctors invest an average of 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and as a matter of fact several podiatry programmes are located within these institutions. After acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have gained comprehensive health care education with a main focus on concerns regarding the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are studied to deal with concerns extending from basic conditions for instance fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are a lot more obscure for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical instruction which give them the skill necessary to perform surgical treatment on those troubles that are best treated through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a comprehensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait deviations enables a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and avoid a large number of problems which the feet usually experience.
