Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists put in an average of 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles general medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs are contained inside these schools. Upon receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
Upon the conclusion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric doctors have acquired comprehensive healthcare training with an emphasis on problems involving the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are taught to handle problems varying from general ailments like fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are a lot more perplexing for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical instruction which give them the prior experience required to execute surgery on those problems that are ideally remedied through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs receive as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Knowing biomechanics and gait abnormalities makes it possible for a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and reduce the chances of numerous problems which the feet generally experience.
