Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists put in an average of ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in point of fact several podiatry training programs lie inside these institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Doctors have received significant health care training with an importance on complications pertaining to the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are taught to deal with problems varying from basic afflictions for instance fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more complicated for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical education which furnish them the experience necessary to conduct surgery on those conditions that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait problems makes it easy for a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and avoid a large number of conditions which the feet generally encounter.
