Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists invest approximately a decade in education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and in point of fact many podiatry training programs are contained inside these institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have acquired considerable medical training with a stress on complications involving the ankles and feet. They are instructed to handle problems ranging from typical problems like fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are much more obscure including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have substantial surgical training which provide them the practical experience necessary to perform surgical treatment on those troubles that are best treated through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors furthermore have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet receive as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait peculiarities enables a Podiatrist to develop shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and defend against a large number of complications which the feet commonly encounter.
