Medical doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. They spend an average of a decade in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to usual medical school and a number of podiatry programs lie inside these academic institutions. After getting a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received extensive medical training with an emphasis on problems involving the feet and ankles. They are skilled to deal with complications ranging from familiar ailments for instance, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are even more challenging such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have thorough surgical training which give them the skill necessary to carry out surgical treatment on those problems that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet experience as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Realizing biomechanics and gait problems makes it possible for a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and protect against numerous troubles which the feet usually encounter.
