Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialise in the medical and surgical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our doctors spend about a decade in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles traditional medical school and in fact many podiatry training programs are located inside these institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another 1 - 3 years.
At the finalization of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have acquired thorough healthcare training with a stress on conditions concerning the feet and ankles. They are trained to address conditions ranging from common afflictions such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are even more sophisticated for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have comprehensive surgical training which give them the practical experience vital to carry out surgical treatment on those troubles that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it possible for a Foot doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and defend against many conditions which the feet typically encounter.
