Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the surgical and medical therapy of the ankle and foot. Foot Institute Doctors spend about 10 years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to traditional medical school and in point of fact quite a number podiatry programmes are located within these institutions. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric doctors have received considerable healthcare training with an emphasis on problems regarding the feet and ankles. They are taught to address conditions ranging from usual disorders for instance, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are more complex for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have considerable surgical education which give them the experience necessary to carry out surgical treatment on those troubles that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait deviations allows a Podiatrist to develop shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and reduce the chances of a large number of conditions which the feet usually experience.
