Doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer focus on the surgical and medical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our doctors put in approximately ten years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and numerous podiatry programs are located within these academic institutions. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received wide-ranging medical training with a focus on problems involving the feet and ankles. They are trained to address issues varying from normal ailments like fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are more perplexing for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have extensive surgical education which give them the prior experience needed to conduct surgical treatment on those problems that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it easy for a Foot doctor to create shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and minimize the risk of countless complications which the feet normally encounter.
