Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Red Deer focus on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. They spend about 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to usual medical school and in fact a number of podiatry programmes lie inside these schools. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric doctors have received significant medical training with a main focus on concerns pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are studied to manage conditions varying from basic ailments such as ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are even more intricate for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have significant surgical training which give them the skill necessary to execute surgery on those complications that are ideally handled through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet withstand as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it possible for a Podiatrist to create footwear and orthotics which can give pain relief and reduce the chances of countless problems which the feet frequently encounter.
