Medical professionals here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialise in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our doctors invest about a decade in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in fact a number of podiatry programs are located inside these schools. Upon attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric doctors have gained wide-ranging medical training with a main focus on problems involving the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are instructed to deal with complications extending from common problems such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are more intricate such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have significant surgical education which supply them the experience essential to conduct surgical treatment on those concerns that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have an extensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs withstand as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait abnormalities makes it easy for a Podiatric physician to design footwear and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and avoid many problems which the feet frequently experience.
