Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. They invest approximately a decade in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to standard medical school and in point of fact various podiatry programmes are located within these schools. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric doctors have acquired wide-ranging healthcare instruction with an emphasis on conditions pertaining to the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are studied to address problems varying from familiar problems like ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are even more challenging such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have thorough surgical instruction which provide them the skill necessary to conduct surgery on those problems that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it possible for a Podiatric doctor to design footwear and orthotics which can give pain relief and protect against many problems which the feet generally encounter.
