Medical professionals here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer focus on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists invest approximately 10 years in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to standard medical school and in fact various podiatry programmes are contained inside these academic institutions. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have acquired extensive healthcare education with a concentration on concerns pertaining to the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are trained to treat problems stretching from general ailments like ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are more puzzling including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have significant surgical instruction which supply them the experience necessary to conduct surgery on those concerns that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait deviations makes it possible for a Podiatric physician to create shoes and orthotics that can give pain relief and avoid many issues which the feet frequently encounter.
