Physicians at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialise in the medical and surgical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our doctors put in an average of 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to usual medical school and actually many podiatry training programs are located within these academic institutions. Upon acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another 1 to 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Foot doctors have acquired substantial healthcare instruction with an emphasis on complications involving the feet and ankles. They are studied to treat conditions stretching from common ailments such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are far more complex such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have comprehensive surgical training which provide them the prior experience necessary to carry out surgical treatment on those complications that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have an extensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait problems allows a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and help prevent a large number of issues which the feet commonly experience.
