Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists invest an average of a decade in learning, the first four years in undergrad studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to typical medical school and in fact quite a number podiatry programs are located within these schools. Upon achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
At the finalization of the internship or residency, our Doctors have received extensive health care education with an emphasis on concerns involving the ankles and feet. They are taught to treat problems varying from standard disorders for instance, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are even more complex for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have comprehensive surgical instruction which give them the experience necessary to execute surgery on those problems that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet endure as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Understanding biomechanics and gait deviations empowers a Podiatric physician to design footwear and orthotics which can provide pain relief and avoid a large number of issues which the feet normally encounter.
