Physicians at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists spend an average of ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to typical medical school and in reality many podiatry programs are located within these schools. After receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received encompassing healthcare training with a main focus on problems pertaining to the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are trained to manage problems ranging from simple ailments such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are more perplexing including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have extensive surgical instruction which provide them the practical experience vital to perform surgery on those conditions that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait peculiarities permits a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and protect against a large number of troubles which the feet routinely encounter.
