Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Red Deer provide services for the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Foot Institute Doctors spend approximately 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to typical medical school and in reality several podiatry training programs are contained within these institutions. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received substantial healthcare training with a focus on problems pertaining to the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are instructed to handle complications ranging from simple afflictions like fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are much more sophisticated including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have thorough surgical education which furnish them the expertise necessary to perform surgery on those problems that are best handled through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait problems allows a Podiatrist to develop shoes and orthotics that can provide pain relief and protect against a large number of issues which the feet routinely encounter.
