Physicians at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists put in an average of 10 years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles regular medical school and in fact many podiatry training programs are located within these academic institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have acquired considerable medical instruction with an emphasis on issues concerning the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are studied to deal with issues extending from standard afflictions for instance, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are even more complicated for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have comprehensive surgical instruction which furnish them the experience needed to perform surgery on those concerns that are best remedied through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait peculiarities allows a Podiatrist to develop footwear and orthotics that can offer pain relief and defend against many troubles which the feet frequently encounter.
