Physicians here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Foot Institute Podiatrists spend about 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to typical medical school and in reality several podiatry training programs are contained within these schools. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have gained considerable medical training with an emphasis on problems concerning the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are educated to treat problems ranging from commonplace disorders for instance, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more challenging including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have comprehensive surgical instruction which supply them the experience needed to conduct surgery on those problems that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a comprehensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs go through as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait deviations allows a Podiatric physician to design footwear and orthotics that can provide pain relief and avoid many complications which the feet regularly experience.
