Medical doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialise in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists devote about 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and many podiatry programmes are located within these schools. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have obtained wide-ranging medical education with an emphasis on complications concerning the feet and ankles. They are instructed to address complications varying from basic ailments for instance ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are much more perplexing for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have significant surgical education which give them the expertise necessary to perform surgical treatment on those conditions that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait peculiarities enables a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and minimize the risk of countless issues which the feet commonly experience.
