Doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the surgical and medical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists spend an average of 10 years in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to standard medical school and as a matter of fact quite a number podiatry programs are contained within these schools. After acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 - 3 years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have obtained significant healthcare instruction with a concentration on problems involving the ankles and feet. They are qualified to address problems varying from regular conditions for instance, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are more sophisticated for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical training which provide them the practical experience necessary to perform surgery on those problems that are ideally remedied through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait deviations allows a Podiatric physician to design footwear and orthotics which can provide pain relief and avoid many issues which the feet regularly encounter.
