Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists put in about 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles conventional medical school and a number of podiatry training programs are located within these academic institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have received comprehensive health care training with an emphasis on problems involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are skilled to deal with conditions varying from commonplace ailments for instance, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are even more sophisticated including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical instruction which furnish them the experience required to perform surgical treatment on those problems that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors additionally have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet receive as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait irregularities allows a Podiatric doctor to develop shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and protect against a large number of issues which the feet frequently experience.
