Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialise in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Foot Institute Podiatrists devote about a decade in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to typical medical school and in point of fact several podiatry programs are contained within these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric doctors have obtained extensive healthcare instruction with a concentration on problems pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are trained to deal with problems stretching from basic conditions for instance, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are even more complicated like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have considerable surgical training which give them the practical experience needed to carry out surgery on those issues that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Learning about biomechanics and gait deviations enables a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and reduce the chances of many problems which the feet commonly experience.
