Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists spend around 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to typical medical school and in fact a number of podiatry programmes lie within these schools. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 to 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric doctors have received extensive medical training with an emphasis on issues regarding the ankles and feet. They are qualified to handle problems varying from typical disorders for example, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are even more complicated including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have thorough surgical education which supply them the experience necessary to perform surgery on those issues that are ideally managed through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Understanding biomechanics and gait irregularities permits a Podiatrist to develop footwear and orthotics that can offer pain relief and protect against many conditions which the feet frequently experience.
