Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our doctors invest approximately 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and many podiatry training programs are located within these academic institutions. Upon achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received thorough health care training with a main focus on problems involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are educated to handle problems stretching from familiar afflictions for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more puzzling such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have comprehensive surgical instruction which supply them the skill vital to carry out surgical treatment on those complications that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Recognizing biomechanics and gait deviations makes it easy for a Podiatric doctor to create footwear and orthotics which can provide pain relief and minimize the risk of countless conditions which the feet generally experience.
