Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Foot Institute Doctors devote about ten years in learning, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in fact a number of podiatry training programs are located within these academic institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric doctors have gained comprehensive medical instruction with a concentration on issues involving the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are trained to treat problems ranging from general disorders like ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are much more complex for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have substantial surgical training which give them the experience crucial to conduct surgery on those problems that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait deviations permits a Podiatric physician to create footwear and orthotics which can offer pain relief and defend against a large number of problems which the feet normally encounter.
