Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Red Deer focus on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our doctors spend about 10 years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in reality several podiatry programmes are located inside these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have received wide-ranging health care training with an emphasis on problems pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are studied to treat problems extending from simple disorders for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are even more obscure for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have thorough surgical education which give them the prior experience necessary to perform surgical treatment on those concerns that are ideally managed through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait deviations makes it easy for a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and reduce the chances of countless conditions which the feet routinely encounter.
