Physicians here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our doctors spend approximately a decade in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles regular medical school and in fact various podiatry training programs are contained within these academic institutions. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Foot doctors have received substantial health care instruction with a focus on conditions pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are trained to deal with complications ranging from conventional ailments for instance, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are even more intricate including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have comprehensive surgical instruction which provide them the skill necessary to perform surgery on those problems that are ideally managed through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet experience as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait deviations empowers a Podiatric doctor to design footwear and orthotics which can offer pain relief and defend against many conditions which the feet regularly experience.
